This spinning wheel is ade from oak and another woood which has been stained to resemble walnut. This type spins flax, cotton, and silk. The spinster sits beside a low wheel and revolves it with a foot treadle that frees both hands to feed the fibers to the spindle. A flyer revolving around the spindle and bobbin winds the yarn onto the bobbin as fast as it is spun. A small driving wheel is mounted on the bench above the readle. The spinning device is at the end of the bench. Treadling of the fibers being spun must be steady in order to insure an even twist.
