Jacob Guyer

Jacob Guyer (1811-1896) was a musician of talent and influence. A concert master, Jacob played first violin for the Rouse Hall Orchestra which was a precursor to the Peoria Symphony Orchestra.

Guyer was born in Lorraine, France but spoke fluent German. After immigrating to the United States and landing in Philadelphia, Guyer met a widow with two daughters. From Philadelphia, they travelled west to Tazewell County and were married in the original St. Joseph’s Church of Pekin. The couple settled in Peoria where Guyer soon after began his involvement with the arts.

While Guyer’s specific influence within the Peoria music scene was brief, he set the stage for the powerful rise of the Peoria Symphony Orchestra and the profound influence of its leader – Harold Plowe.
