A first day of issue envelope for the 1946 Smithsonian Institute three cent stamp. The Smithsonian stamp has the inscription, “For the Increase and Diffusion of Knowledge Among Men.” This text was an excerpt from James Smithsonian’s’s. The entire passage reads what Smithsonian wanted to happen to his estate, “to found at Washington, under the name of the Smithsonian Institution, an establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge among men.” This stamp was made to commemorate 100 years of the Smithsonian. The address on the envelope reads, “Jon Riggs Ziegele High Point Road Peoria 4, Illinois. The envelope is postmarked, ” Washington D. C. Nov. 9 9 AM 1943.”
