An article from the Peoria Journal Star, “Civil” by Erin Wood. The article is focusing on 15 local civil war re-enactors and their construction of winter quarters at Sommer Park. One of the re-enactors is Tim Varvil of Peoria, Rod Mehl’s cousin. Varvil discusses the warmth of the cabins saying, “It’s actually quite toasty in there. If you’re at the top of the three bunk beds, you are more than warm. This is my hobby and my passion. There are so many reasons why I enjoy it. I’m just really into history.” There is also a large color photo above the article of Greg Schuller, a re-enactor since 1972 and a Peorian, filling gaps in the cabin with a mixture of mud, clay, and straw.
