First words and music written by Charles H. Chamberlin and Archibald Johnon in 1893 prior to World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893. Mr. Chamberlin was veteran of Civil War. Mr. Johnson adapted a popular song, which he had written earlier, to the words. Introduced at reunion of “Army at Potamac” in Chicago – Pres. McKinley, speaker. Bill introduced by State Senator Florence Fifer Bohres which made it the State song on June 30, 1925. Two new verses for the Sesquicentennial Celebration have been written by Wm. Stracke.
