35 page play written by Garry Moore (WEEK newscaster) on the history of African Americans in Peoria. The play opens with a school scene in present day (1992). Two adolescent boys do not know anything about black history and are given the task of cleaning history exhibits by their teacher. When they open a strange chest, they are transported back in time. In the past, they meet famous African American figures in Peoria such as Jean DuSable, Frederick Douglass, etc. The play is written in colloquial dialect. Based on “The Negro in Peoria” by Dr. Romeo B. Garrett, Professor Emeritus of Bradley University (referenced in the play, end). The first run of the play was February 7, 1992 as part of the Peoria Tricentennial celebration (1991).
