Augusta Pettengill with children Annie and Georgie departed Peoria, Illinois on March 5,1884, destined for Boston, Massachusetts to visit her parents. They arrived on March 7, 1884. She records the visit in her diary (2015.39.36 B3) and Georgie’s illness and death April 22, 1884. “He has suffered a great deal for nearly seven weeks but is now at rest” she wrote. On April 26 Georgie’s casket was temporarily plced in a tomb in Forest Hills Cemetery ater the funerakl service held at the home of her parents. Earlier that day “An artist came and looked at Georgie and took away a photograph with him and is going to make a life sizecrayon, a present from his grandfather for whom he was named.” The artist is not identified. Augusta, with Blanchard, wjo had gone to Boston, and daughter Annie, returned ot Peoria May 14 with the casket. Georgie was buried in Springdale Cemetery in Peoria on May 16, 1884. A grave marker in Walnut Hills Cemetery, Brookline, Massachusetts bears his name. Susan Elizabeth Cushing White, Augusta’s mother, also writes of Georgie’s death and protrait inher diary (2015.36.46 B4). On April 24, 1884 she wrote “Georie and Iwent down to the photographers to see abut having a Crayon made of Georgie.” See the carte de visite image of Georgie used by the artist for the crayon drawing (2015.39.764 B39). Augusta Pettengill’s February 5, 1885 diary (2015.39.36 B3) entry reveals the location that the portrait hung in the house on Moss Avenue in Peoria, Illinois “I made some changes in the back parlor this eveninig. B changed Georgie’s portrait from the front to the back parlor and hung several other picture.”
