This late Empire/Early Victorian sofa is upholstered in a wine-colored velour. The show wood is of mahogany veneer. The lines are scrolls. An old Virginia family by the name of Winchester came to Peoria, September 1909. Eight days later, they held an auction (September 23, 1909). Mr. James Huxtible bought this sofa at that auction. He paid $32.00. Two days later, a collector offered him $800.00 and shipping costs. The man wanted to take the sofa to New York and show it at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Mr. Huxtible refused the offer. Mr. and Mrs. Homer Keller purchased the sofa from Mr. Huxtible in October 1941 for $175.00. Soon a collector offered Mrs. Keller $1500.00 for it. The sofa is similar to the one upon which John Quincy Adams died after suffering a heart attack in the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.(information provided by donor)
