Leather trunk which belonged to donor’s grandfather Gustavus Schmipff from Germany. Gustavus Schimpff was born in Bavaria, Germany on December 19, 1841. He immigrated to the US with his family in 1849, first to St. Louis, then to Peoria. Gustavus served as a musician in Company H, Missouri 8th Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. He became employed as a druggist’s clerk and later served as the secretary/treasurer of Kingman Company. A prominent Mason, Gustavus was additionally a charter member of the Bryner Post, G.A.R. He and his wife are buried in Springdale Cemetery.
