Josiah & Augusta Fulton

Pioneers:

Literally one of Peoria’s earliest pioneers, Josiah Fulton, with six other settlers, came north from the St. Louis area and arrived in Peoria on April 15, 1819. In company with Josiah were his brothers Seth and Sam, brother-in-law Abner Eads and others.

While many of the other early settlers moved on to other locations, Josiah stayed in Peoria, lived a long, productive life and is touted as the “Father of Peoria.”

Josiah Fulton purchased farm land in a variety of locations throughout the area. He owned land in the downtown area where the County Courthouse and First National Bank buildings now stand. Additionally, Fulton worked as a county supervisor while brothers Seth and Sam became a hotelkeeper and first county sheriff, respectively.

Josiah passed at age 94 in 1894 and is buried with wife Augusta in Springdale Cemetery. Augusta and Josh raised ten kids. Söme of their descendants continue to inhabit the Peoria area, giving honor to their pioneering ancestors.
